It began in 1892 as one small grocery store and has since reached 422 chain stores. The original roots began in Boston as a store called the Greenie Store and later evolved into Stop & Shop in 1914. By 1917 they were operating 15 stores and by 1946 they had 86 super markets.

Stop & Shop was an early innovator of the modern grocery store selling a variety of foods all in one place  Stores sizes were 10,000 to 15,000 square feet and in downtown and they were located in high traffics areas and popular cities in the north east.

In 2004 Stop and Shop merged with Giant brand food stores and in 2015 announced they would merge with Delhaize group, a grocery conglomerate that also owns Food Lion.
